Fall is just around the corner! With it comes the brilliant new colors of the leaves and cooler temperatures as we move into winter. Along with these changes, however, there are also a few things that can put your property at risk for water damage, temperature issues, and other risks. Here are a few things you can to fortify your home for the change in seasons.
Everyone hates to do this, but it is an important part of maintaining your home. With the fall season coming, leaves and other muck are likely to get stuck up in your gutter. Before this becomes unmanageable, clean your gutters out now and then give them one more cleaning once all the leaves have fallen. Sure, it means you have to do it twice, but it will be relatively easy and painless if you do it when the job is manageable as opposed to when it becomes a huge headache. Not to mention, if you gutters are full going into the winter, the snow ice and in your gutters could cause them to crack and break under the pressure causing potential water damage to your home.
If the temperature ever drops below freezing in the area you live in this is very important. Make sure that your outside faucets and in-ground irrigation systems if you have one are shut off. If you don’t do this, the water trapped in your pipes will expand when it freezes ad potentially cause your pipes to burst.
It’s important that you take a few minutes at some point to get on top of your roof to do a brief inspection. Look for any damaged or curled shingles, corroded flashing, leaky vents, or anything that just doesn’t look right. Making the time to do this will be a lifesaver if you encounter heavy snow or rain. You can be confident you won’t suffer from any water damage due to a leaky roof.
Gaps in the caulk and weather stripping in your home can account for approximately 10 of you heating bill according to the US Department of Energy. This is another really simple step that if you just take the time to do it you won’t have to worry about those types of problems throughout the winter. Be diligent in your search, though. When temperatures are more moderate it is a lot more difficult to detect a draft in your home, but it will more than noticeable when temperatures start to drop below freezing.
